Young people have been sold a lie. The world of work is changing beyond recognition. As AI evolves, so does the job market - eroding the emancipatory power a university education once had, leaving a record number of young people as NEETs.
How do we build an economy that works for young people, and give them a genuine promise of a better future?

Business rates, national insurance rises, and revolutionary changes in consumer behaviour have altered British high streets. Small and large businesses are struggling, shops remain empty or temporarily filled with illegal vape and American candy shops - so how do we change this? Join Millie Kendal OBE, founder of the Beauty Council, Vikki Slade MP, who sits on the High Streets & Towns Regeneration Working Group and our LDBEN Chair, Mihir Magudia for a discussion on regenerating our high streets.

📅 Tuesday 8th December - Can Property Tax be Politically Palatable?

Everyone agrees Britain’s tax system is a mess. Its complexity breeds distortions, burdens growth and imposes costs on taxpayers and the government alike. It penalises work, risk-taking and thrift, while leaving much unearned wealth—particularly in land values— untouched. The "squeezed middle” pays too much, and the very rich far too little.
But how to fix it? Simplifying and broadening our tax system, and shifting the burden to unearned increases in wealth, sounds great in theory, but hits huge political obstacles in practice.
Dan Neidle used to work at Clifford Chance, where he was “horribly overpaid” providing tax advice to some of the world’s largest businesses. He is now Britain’s foremost campaigner for tax reform. He writes in the FT and other newspapers and offers powerful critiques on social media of this and previous governments’ policy failures. We are delighted to host him in discussion with Sarah Olney, Lib Dem MP for Richmond Park, Business Spokesperson, and one of the party’s most formidable front-benchers and Angel Investor & Proportional Property Tax advocate, Andrew Dixon, who founded the Fairer Share campaign. They will be in discussions with Edward Lucas, a columnist for The Times and a witness to tax reform successes in countries such as Estonia.
If the Lib Dems are going to champion tax reform, then it has to work on the doorstep in seats like Richmond Park. How should we frame the problem and the solutions? What are the priorities and trade-offs?
